SUMMARY:Ottawa4FortMac Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:As you may know\, in a city-wide evacuation\, wildfires have displaced tens of thousands of residents of Fort McMurray\, Alberta\, including nearby communities. \n#Ottawa4FortMac is a fundraiser hosted by Ottawa Senators player Chris Phillips and Mayor Jim Watson. It will take place from 6:30PM to 10:00PM on Wednesday June 8\, ‎Aberdeen Pavilion\, at Lansdowne Park. \nThis “western roundup” themed event will feature live music by Ottawa-born Country sensation Kira Isabella\, Ottawa Country group River Town Saints and Country brother duo The Abrams\, as well as Jordan McIntosh and Meghan Patrick. Enjoy a dinner catered by local pizzerias\, craft beer sampling provided by local breweries and western-themed activities. \nTickets for the Fort McMurray fundraising event are now on sale\, at a cost of $ 80 each.  \nTickets are in limited quantities and are available for purchase online here\, or by cash payment at Big Rig Brewery locations and at the Mayor’s office at City Hall. Donations made by May 31 will be matched by the Government of Canada.  \nThis natural disaster may become the costliest in Canadian history\, but the impact on the lives of our fellow Canadians in Fort McMurray is much greater. \nIt is crucial that residents of Ottawa unite to assist those who have been affected by this tragedy.   \nPlease consider supporting the residents of Fort McMurray as they rebuild their lives and their community\, by attending #Ottawa4FortMac or volunteering at the event. \n

SUMMARY:Capital Ukrainian Festival
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa Celebrates 125th Anniversary of Ukrainian Immigration to Canada\nThis year marks a historical milestone for Ukrainian-Canadians – the 125th Anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. There are over 1.3 million Canadians of Ukrainian descent\, of those\, 25\,000 live in Ottawa. The Capital Ukrainian Festival has four days of memorable activities to celebrate the occasion. \nOn Thursday\, July 21\, 2016\, you can explore Ukrainian-Canadian culture and history with a stellar series of award-winning films. On Friday\, July 22\, 2016\, join us on the catwalk where we will showcase art and fashion. To end the evening\, you can dance the night away under the stars at the DJ dance party.\nOn Saturday\, July 23\, 2016\, take the opportunity to experience the cultural richness of all that is Ukrainian! Our line-up of performers will be diverse and unforgettable\, promising something for all tastes and all audiences. Sunday’s program on July 24\, 2016 brings the Festival to a new level with late afternoon Operatic performances\, and the One World show where we invite other cultures and nationalities to celebrate with us on stage. \nYou will also experience traditional and modern Ukrainian culture as you step into the Yarmarok\, the Ukrainian word for marketplace\, where Ukrainians have traditionally gathered to buy and sell goods\, exchange news and ideas\, and share gossip. \nAnd of course what would a Festival be without food? This is the weekend when you stock up on traditional Ukrainian food: varenyky (perogies)\, cabbage rolls\, borshch and other culinary favorites. Visitors to the Beer Gardens can also enjoy an ice cold Lvivske 1715 — premium Beer from the oldest still-functioning brewery in Eastern Europe. \nThe 2016 festival experience will provide a variety of activities each day\, with something for everyone: workshops\, demonstrations\, children’s activities\, and even fireworks on Saturday night. Admission and parking are free. For more information\, visit our website at: www.capitalukrainianfestival.com.

SUMMARY:Capital Ukrainian Festival - Free Film Night
DESCRIPTION:The Capital Ukrainian Festival Kicks off its 4-Day Festival with a Free Evening of Films \nCircle Thursday\, July 21\, 2016 for a free evening of award winning films showcasing Ukrainian-Canadian culture and history.  Designed to appeal to a variety of audiences\, genres include: comedy\, sports\, politics and drama. \nIn “Laughter in my Soul” (5:30pm)\, the cartoon character\, “Shteef Tabachniuk\, takes us through the first wave of Ukrainian immigration to western Canada. A film by award-winning director and producer\, Halya Kuchmij\, this film promises laughter for the entire family. \nAttention all hockey fans!  Danny Schur takes us on a journey through the life and accomplishments of “the world’s greatest goalie” – Ukrainian-Canadian Terry Sawchuk\, in “Made in Winnipeg: The Terry Sawchuk Origin Story” (6:30pm).  This decorated player revolutionized goalkeeping\, serving as an inspiration for all future goalies\, with his legendary accomplishments immortalized in the Hockey Hall of Fame. A “must-see” for hockey fans of all ages! \n“A Man for All Canadians” (7:00 pm) features the life and work of The Right Honourable Raymond Hnatyshyn\, the 24th Governor General of Canada\, as seen through the eyes of his family and friends\, including former prime ministers Joe Clark\, Brian Mulroney\, and Canadian broadcaster Peter Mansbridge. Executive producer\, Iryna Korpan\, provides an intimate look into the life and accomplishments of this iconic Canadian. \nThe evening ends with Ukraine’s 2014 Academy Award entry for Best Foreign Language Film\, “The Guide” (8:30pm). In this critically acclaimed drama\, viewers journey with a young boy from the 1930s whose father was killed by the Soviets for obtaining documents about the repressions.  Befriended by a blind Ukrainian folk minstrel (kobzar)\, the young boy learns to survive his early tragedies through the magical and healing powers of storytelling and folklore. Their journey builds to a chillingly spectacular conclusion\, challenging viewers to examine whether the blind kobzar may see the world with greater clarity than those with perfect vision. \nAll films will be shown on a large LED screen under a tent on Festival Grounds (952 Green Valley Crescent\, Ottawa\, ON).  Food\, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. Admission and parking are free.  Free-will donations are gratefully accepted.   \nFor more information\, please see:\nhttp://capitalukrainianfestival.com/film-night.html

SUMMARY:Baseline Road Rapid Transit Corridor (Bayshore Station to Billings Bridge Station) Planning and Environmental Assessment Study
DESCRIPTION:Open House # 4 (Final)\nWednesday\, October 5\, 2016\nNepean Sportsplex\, Halls A and B\n1701 Woodroffe Avenue\n6 to 9 p.m.\, presentation: 7 p.m.\nTransit Access: 94\, 95\, 157\, 173 \n  \nThe City of Ottawa is working on a Planning and Environmental Assessment (EA) Study to assess and develop a recommended plan for implementation of the proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) facility along Baseline-Heron Road corridor with connections to Bayshore\, Baseline and Billings Bridge Transitway Stations (Figure 1). The 2013 Transportation Master Plan (TMP) identifies Baseline Road as “at-grade Bus Rapid Transit” corridor. \nFigure 1 \nThe proposed facility will: \n\nProvide a quality transit service alternative for cross-town transit trips without the need to travel via downtown while connecting major transitway stations which includes Bayshore\, Baseline\, Confederation (Trillium Line) and Billings Bridge\nAccommodate increasing travel demand across the City and help achieve modal share targets as set out in the TMP\nSupport City building objectives with respect to connecting significant employment\, commercial and higher density residential land uses to the City’s rapid transit network\nResult in the expansion and improvement of the rapid transit network across the city\nProvide infrastructure for pedestrian and cycling.\n\nImplementation of BRT facility is identified in the TMP as follows: \n\nBaseline Station to Billings Bridge Station: within the planning horizon to 2031 (subject to funding)\nBaseline Station to Bayshore Station: Ultimate build-out post 2031\n\nTransit Priority measures: (Queue jump lanes\, removal of bus bays\, traffic signal priority) Part of 2031 Affordable Network\n\n\n\nBackground:\nBaseline Road is a major transportation corridor that facilitates movement of people and goods in east-west direction. Land use in the study area includes Bayshore Shopping Mall\, Queensway-Carleton Hospital\, Pinecrest Cemetery\, Algonquin College\, College Square\, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada\, Experimental Farms\, Confederation Heights\, Billings Bridge Plaza\, schools\, parks\, retail centres\, single unit residential homes\, town houses and multi-storied apartment buildings. \nOther arterials that intersect the proposed BRT corridor are Richmond Road\, Greenbank Road\, Woodroffe Avenue\, Clyde Avenue\, Merivale Road\, Fisher Avenue\, Prince of Wales Drive and Riverside Drive which accommodate substantial north-south travel demand throughout the day with high traffic volumes during peak periods. \nBaseline Road is classified as an arterial four-lane roadway with a median that separates east and west traffic movements. City’s Official Plan (OP) identifies protection of 44.5 m right-of-way along Baseline Road BRT corridor. \nStudy Area:\nBaseline Road BRT corridor is approximately 14.5 km in length that stretches between Bayshore Station and Billings Bridge Station along a corridor following Holly Acres Road\, Richmond Road\, Baseline Road\, Navaho Drive and Heron Road and includes the area around Baseline Station (Figure 1). \nThe primary goals of this study are to: \n\nComplete a planning study to establish a recommended plan for the BRT facility that will support the urban development and land use objectives identified in the OP\, TMP\, relevant provincial\, National Capital Commission and federal plans\, strategies and policies\nAddress EA requirements and document the project’s impacts on the environment\, including the necessary mitigation to offset any negative impacts\nConsider and balance the interrelated needs of transit\, pedestrians\, cyclists\, goods movement\, automobile traffic and property issues.\n\nFor further information contact:\nJabbar Siddique\, P.Eng.\nSr. Project EngineerTransportation Planning\nPlanning and Growth Management Department\n110 Laurier Avenue West\, 4th Floor\nOttawa\, ON K1P 1J1\n613-580-2424\, ext. 13914\nFacsimile: 613-580-2578\nE-mail:jabbar.siddique@ottawa.ca\n
