River Ward Community Update
Dear friends and neighbours of River Ward,
May is a beautiful month in River Ward, with the blooming crab apple trees along Prince of Wales Drive, tulips on what seems every front yard, trees bursting with new leaves, and a general sense that spring is in full gear.
Please go outside. Whether you enjoy leisurely strolls or more active pursuits, outdoor recreational activities are part of a healthy balance for our physical and mental health during COVID. River Ward has so much to offer.
Join me this month for a conversation about cycling infrastructure in River Ward, as part of a greater consultation on active transportation for the Transportation Master Plan. See the Coming Events section below for details. I remain disappointed by the state of a number of sidewalks in the ward and encourage you to provide me with specifics about stretches of sidewalks that are in a state of disrepair. Active transportation infrastructure is a priority for me because it is a priority for you. Share with me your priorities to make it safer for you to walk, jog, or ride your scooter and/or bike.
Thank you to those who have been active and engaged in the Official Plan process to date, many comments and feedback from community organizations and individuals from River Ward were sent to the City this past winter and spring. I submitted a four-page summary to Planning Staff that underscored the main themes and concerns about the draft Official Plan that I have heard and read over the first three months of 2021. A special As We Heard It report is expected out later this month by the Planning Dept that will summarize the issues by ward and commentary to match.
Ramadan is expected to end at sundown on Wednesday, May 12. The final evening of Ramadan consists of a celebration called Eid al-Fitr, when the traditional month-long fast is ended with a feast. To everyone celebrating during Holy Month, I wish you and your family well.
Last but certainly not least, Happy Mother’s Day (May 9) to all mothers. To all the thoughtful, loving, and caring mothers, please accept my best wishes and enjoy your special day.
Stay safe, stay well.
Sincerely,
Riley
