About Riley

Riley Brockington – City Councillor, River Ward

Riley is proud to call the Riverside Park/Mooney’s Bay neighbourhood of River Ward home.

He is a life-long resident of the ward and attended public schools in the same community he now represents.

Following graduation from Brookfield High School, Riley attended the University of Ottawa where he obtained his degree in Economics.  He also has a strong background in accounting and business management.  After a brief summer opportunity in the Canadian Army Reserves, Governor-General Foot Guard Regiment, Riley was offered full-time employment with Statistics Canada, where he remained for almost 16 years until his election in October 2014.

In addition to his work at Statistics Canada, Riley was an active member of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE), a professional association that provides services to approximately 13,000 federal public service economists, sociologists, research analysts and translators.

Riley has contributed to his community in many capacities, including seven years with the Riverside Park Community and Recreation Association (RPCRA), six years with the Hunt Club-Riverside Community Centre Board of Directors and two years with the Hunt Club Community Organization (HCCO).

From 2003 to 2010, Riley served River Ward for two terms as their public School Board Trustee.  During that time, he chaired the Business Services Committee and Budget Committee.  He was elected twice by his peers to serve as Vice-Chair of the School Board, during which time he chaired all Committee of the Whole meetings, In Camera Meetings, as well as Suspension and Expulsion Appeal Hearings.  In 2009, Riley was elected Vice-President of the Ontario Public School Boards Association by Trustees from across Ontario. In the autumn of 2010, Ottawa Life Magazine profiled Riley as one of the 50 most interesting people in Ottawa for both his professional and public service contributions to education.

In October 2014, residents of River Ward elected Riley to serve as their City Councillor.  During his first term in office (2014-2018), Riley served as Vice-Chair of the Community and Protection Services Committee and member of both the Environment and Climate Protection Committee and the Planning Committee.

In October 2018, residents of River Ward re-elected Riley for a second term (2018-2022). During the current term, Riley serves as a member of the Planning Committee, Environment Committee, Transit Commission, Ottawa Public Library Board, and Built Heritage Sub-Committee. In late 2018, his peers on City Council appointed him to be the City’s representative on the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) for a two-year term and in April 2019, he was appointed to be Council’s representative on the Canadian Capital Cities Organization (CCCO).

Riley is a single father with two fantastic daughters who both attend school in River Ward.
