Riley is a life-long resident of River Ward, having attended public schools in the same community he now represents.
Following high school, Riley attended the University of Ottawa where he obtained his degree in Economics. He also has a strong background in accounting and business management. After a brief period in the Canadian Army Reserves, Governor General Foot Guard Regiment, Riley was offered full-time employment with Statistics Canada, where he remained for almost 16 years. At the time of the election, Riley was an economist/senior analyst working most recently with international travel data and prior to that managing a national education survey.
In addition to his work at Statistics Canada, Riley was an active member of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE), a professional association that provides services to approximately 13,000 federal public service economists, sociologists, research analysts and translators. At the time of his election victory, Riley was the National Vice-President of CAPE and Chair of the Finance Committee.
Riley has contributed to his community in many capacities, including seven years with the Riverside Park Community and Recreation Association (RPCRA), six years with the Hunt Club-Riverside Community Centre Board of Directors and two years with the Hunt Club Community Organization (HCCO).
From 2003 to 2010, Riley served River Ward for two terms as their public School Board Trustee. During that time, he chaired the Business Services Committee and Budget Committee. He was elected twice by his peers to serve as Vice-Chair of the School Board and in 2009, Riley was elected Vice-President of the Ontario Public School Boards Association by Trustees from across Ontario.
In the autumn of 2010, Ottawa Life Magazine profiled Riley as one of the 50 most interesting people in Ottawa for both his professional and public service contributions to education.
In October 2014, residents of River Ward elected Riley to serve as their City Councillor.
Riley is a single father with two fantastic daughters. They live in the Mooney’s Bay neighbourhood of River Ward.
