Prince of Wales Culvert Renewal Project – Status Update March 2016

Prince of Wales Culvert Renewal Project – Status Update March 2016

I am pleased to share with you the following report received from city officials regarding the Prince of Wales Culvert Renewal Project.  They have advised that all the in-river work associated with the Prince of Wales Culvert renewal contract was completed on 14th March.  The new, twin pipe culvert configuration is now fully operational  and is conveying a significant volume of flow (which is typical for this time of year) in Nepean Creek to the Rideau River.  This is a significant milestone in this project and it ensures that the city will not need to obtain extensions to the permit timelines for construction from either Parks Canada or the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.  The only remaining work that has to be completed is:

  1. Backfilling and grading the slopes behind the new concrete headwalls.
  2. Grouting of the annular space between the old culvert and the new pipe that was slip-lined inside.
  3. Landscaping
  4. Local asphalt overlay on Prince of Wales Drive along the tunnel alignment.
  5. Site cleanup and demobilization.
They anticipate that items 1 and 2 will be completed within the next few weeks.
Items 3, 4 and 5 will be carried out later this spring, when weather conditions are more suitable.
